Netflix recently added several new K-dramas to its catalog. From love stories to thrillers, there is something for everyone. Check out these Kdramas that recently landed on the streaming platform that you absolutely have to start!
- Goodbye Earth
Goodbye Earth is a refreshing K-Drama that offers a very thought-provoking plot. An adaptation of the work of Japanese novelist Kōtarō Isaka titled “The Fool at the End of the World” (Shūmatsu no Fūru), this dystopian science fiction K-drama, written by Jung Sung Joo and starring famous actors such as Yoo Ah In, Ahn Eun Jin and Jeon Sung Woo, truly explore the darker aspects of reality. From the intense action scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat from the start to the thrilling and nerve-wracking suspense, all these elements make this a K-drama worth watching.
- Ancestral
Ancestral responds to the thriller genre. Yun Seo-ha inherits his uncle’s land… including a cemetery. She then witnesses strange and macabre phenomena. A university professor, she sees her life turned upside down. The young woman meets Kim Young-ho, who claims to be her half-brother and, therefore, the second heir to the family cemetery. In addition to bringing back terrible family memories, this discovery is accompanied by a series of very strange events, which do not fail to disturb the young professor, who until now led a well-ordered life.
- The 8 Show
In The 8 Show, we discover the tantalizing but dangerous story of eight people trapped in a secret eight-story building. They participate in a show where “time equals money”, a concept as attractive as it is risky. On the launch poster, the actors are depicted against a backdrop of red curtains, under the spotlight, in a mixture of excitement and caution.
- Kyongsong’s creature
Kyongsong’s creature – which particularly captured viewers in 2023 with its aesthetic – focuses on the fantastic, the horrific and the historical. We go back to the spring of 1945. At that time, Korea was under Japanese occupation, but soon, during the summer of 1945. In this very dark context, a monster lurks.
The story centers on Jang Tae-sang, a rich and influential man tasked with finding a missing woman, and who will be helped by Chae-ok and Joong-won, a girl and her father. Their investigation takes them to the basement of Ongseong Hospital. We discover Kato’s dark plan: he uses men, women and children to carry out experiments. One of them eventually succeeds and a woman is transformed into a fearsome creature.
- The Schemer and the King
In The Intrigue and the King, Yi In is a very isolated king, especially because he is at the heart of the court’s plots and cannot trust anyone. He falls in love with Kang Hee-soo, the only person who seems interested in him… except that this romance is, at least at the beginning, a make-believe: she seeks revenge on him.
- Frankly Speaking
Song Ki-baek is a presenter whose life is turned upside down following a disorder that causes him to speak without thinking. He then ends up with On Woo-ju, a variety show writer who thinks he will make a great addition to her romance variety show.
- The Atypical Family
This fantasy Kdrama has been very successful in South Korea and features Bok Gwi-joo and his unique family, all of whom were born with a specific supernatural power. However, modern scourges such as insomnia and smartphone addiction are making them lose their powers. The arrival of Do Da-hae, a woman with a superpower, will change the situation.
- My demon
When the demon Jung Koo Won loses his powers, he must bond with an heiress, seemingly contemptuous and with many enemies. However, the two heroes of the My Demon series begin to feel feelings for each other. And everything changes from the moment the young man loses his powers while Do Do-Hee recovers them. We will have to protect the young woman at all costs. Action, fantasy and romance are indeed at the heart of this Korean series which has already climbed to number 5 on the Netflix streaming platform.
- From the sand we will be reborn
From the sand we will be reborn is the story of a champion of ssireum – of wrestling – who sees his success drying up. Fortunately, he has a wonderful romantic encounter.
- Return to Samdal-ri
In Return to Samdal-ri, Cho Eun Hye (Shin Hye-sun) is a successful photographer who built her reputation in Seoul. Originally from the small town of Samdal on the island of Jeju in the south of South Korea, she lives with her two sisters and her niece. But everything collapses the day she discovers her partner’s infidelity. What follows is an escalation of disasters that pushes her to return to her native land and cross paths with her parents, but also with her childhood friend and ex-boyfriend Cho Young Pil (Ji Chang-wook).
Between personal trajectories, family stories, and romantic relationships, the first season of this dramatic comedy develops over sixteen episodes of a good hour each. In short, to discover this beautiful fiction, you have to have the time to take the time. And it’s definitely worth it!
- Parasyte: The Gray
The series, based on the manga Parasyte, is presented as a continuation of the original story which takes place in Japan. Rather than a half-hearted imitation of the manga, this series presents an original story set in South Korea. The Netflix adaptation obviously draws the parallel, but then sticks to its own narrative. And although the flaws and the sometimes ridiculous storyline do not allow me to call Parasyte: The Gray a work of art, the series is still entertaining. This adaptation did not fail to take up the existentialist themes addressed in the manga, which therefore constitutes one of its key points.
- Queen of Tears
Queen of Tears is a real success in South Korea and internationally.
As the most brilliant person from Yongdu-ri, his hometown, of which he is proud, Baek Hyun-Woo is appointed legal director of the conglomerate Queens Group. Baek Hyun-Woo finds himself married to Hong Hae-In, the daughter of the family that owns the Queens Group, who everyone also calls the “Arrogant Queen” of the Queens department store.
