Tang Wei will star in her third Korean film, Wonderland, following her roles in Late Autumn and Decision to Leave.
Wonderland tells the story of people reconnecting with loved ones who have passed away through a video call service powered by artificial intelligence.
Tang Wei, who gained worldwide attention for her powerful performance in director Ang Lee’s film Lust, Caution, made her debut in Korean cinema with director Kim Tae Yong’s Late Autumn and won the Best Actress Award in the Film category at the 2011 Baeksang Arts Awards. In 2022, she won the Best Actress Award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, becoming the first foreign actress to do so for her role as Seo Rae in director Park Chan Wook’s film Decision to Leave.
In Wonderland, Tang Wei plays the role of Bai Li, a mother who requests the Wonderland service to hide her death from her young daughter. Meanwhile, the AI version of Bai Li strives to be a friend-like mother to her daughter living far away by staying. connected with her over video calls.
Tang Wei is expected to captivate the audience by portraying the inner turmoil of a character trapped in the Wonderland world and unable to return to her daughter. Director Kim Tae Yong, who collaborated with Tang Wei for the second time, said, “She was more delicate and more courageous than in Late Autumn. She has immense potential as an actress.”
Wonderland will hit South Korean theaters on June 5th.
