MBC’s upcoming drama “When the Phone Rings” has unveiled key reasons why viewers should mark their calendars for its premiere!

Based on a popular web novel, “When the Phone Rings” tells the story of Baek Sa Eon (Yoo Yeon Seok) and Hong Hee Joo (Chae Soo Bin), a couple that married for convenience—and the romance that blossoms between them after a threatening phone call.

With just two days left until the drama’s premiere, here are three reasons to look forward to the highly-anticipated series:

A unique blend of romance and thriller

Adapted from a popular Kakao Page web novel, “When the Phone Rings” masterfully combines romance with thriller elements. The story follows Baek Sa Eon (Yoo Yeon Seok), who finds himself entangled in an unpredictable series of events when a threatening call claims that his wife Hong Hee Joo (Chae Soo Bin) has been kidnapped.

Hee Joo, who decides to use the kidnapping as an opportunity to transform her life, and Sa Eon, who pursues the mysterious caller, start to uncover new sides of each other. Their emotional journey and the unexpected changes in their relationship will captivate viewers.

Writer Kim Ji Woon explained, “While the main genre is romance, the drama shifts dynamically through romantic comedy, romance, mystery, thriller, and even action, reflecting the characters’ evolving emotions.” Director Park Sang Woo added, “While it might initially seem like a love-hate relationship in an arranged marriage, it is actually a tale of true love that has endured for over 20 years.”

Outstanding performances from Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin

Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin play the lead roles in “When the phone Rings.” Yoo Yeon Seok takes on the role of Baek Sa Eon, the youngest-ever presidential spokesperson, whose impeccable family background, skills, and appearance make him seem flawless.

Chae Soo Bin plays Hong Hee Joo, Sa Eon’s wife, a sign language interpreter struggling with selective mutism. Despite their professions requiring constant communication with others, Sa Eon and Hee Joo are unable to truly communicate with each other. Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin will flawlessly portray the complex relationship between Sa Eon and Hee Joo in a way that will resonate with and captivate viewers.

How a cell phone changes Sa Eon and Hee Joo’s relationship

In the drama, Sa Eon and Hee Joo are a thoroughly disconnected couple who barely speak a word to each other at home. However, their seemingly perfect lives are thrown into chaos after an unexpected threatening phone call. The phone, a key prop in the story, plays a significant role in shaking up their relationship. How the phone affects their lives, Sa Eon’s relentless pursuit of the caller’s identity, and the mysterious phone conversations are sure to capture the viewers’ attention.

“When the Phone Rings” will premiere on November 22 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
