Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin are melting viewers’ hearts with their romance in MBC’s “When the Phone Rings”!
Based on a popular web novel, “When the Phone Rings” tells the story of Baek Sa Eon (Yoo Yeon Seok) and Hong Hee Joo (Chae Soo Bin), a couple that married for convenience—and the the romance that blossoms between them after a threatening phone call.
In Episodes 5 and 6, the emotionally distant couple finally recognized each other’s true feelings and grew closer. Sa Eon, who had always prioritized logic over emotion, showed an unexpected vulnerability with Hee Joo, moving viewers with his change. Here are some of his standout tsundere moments from the show:
Sa Eon caring for Hee Joo even when she doesn’t ask for it
One day, Sa Eon received a threatening call from someone saying his wife had been kidnapped and coldly told the kidnapper, “Call me when there’s a body.” Despite his harsh words, Sa Eon secretly worried about Hee Joo. When he returned home, he was relieved to find her calmly preparing dinner as if nothing had happened.
After an attack at his personal office, Sa Eon became suspicious of the kidnapper’s connection to Hee Joo, but began to show concern for her in subtle ways. Though they had slept in separate rooms since their marriage, Sa Eon intentionally lay in Hee Joo’s bed and comforted her, saying, “What happened the day you were kidnapped was just a bad dream. Forget everything you heard.” His quiet patience as he waited for her to fall asleep made viewers’ hearts skip a beat.
Sa Eon prioritizing his wife’s safety
Sa Eon pressured Hee Joo to confirm whether the intimate photos sent from the kidnapper’s phone were real, but he couldn’t bring himself to undress her. When Hee Joo dropped a glass in shock, Sa Eon coldly said, “You have no sense of professionalism for someone who earns a living with their hands,” before cleaning up the broken glass. Despite his harsh words, his actions revealed a more caring side of his character, leaving a strong impression on viewers.
Sa Eon beginning to show affection
After Hee Joo landed a job in his office, Sa Eon bought her a gift. He also made a sweet gesture by attending the welcoming dinner and taking the lead in grilling meat for her.
However, Sa Eon was shocked when he discovered that the threatening phone calls had been made by Hee Joo. Despite the revelation, he soon understood her true feelings, which led to a change in his behavior. During a staff outing, Sa Eon packed a heart-filled lunch for Hee Joo and shielded her from the sunlight while she slept on the bus. At a sports event, their three years of marriage paid off as they displayed perfect teamwork and even took their first commemorative photo together.
But their happiness was short-lived. While hiking, Hee Joo fell off a cliff, and Sa Eon, overwhelmed by the fear of losing her, desperately searched for her. Sa Eon’s hidden devotion emerged, leaving viewers moved and eagerly anticipating what would happen next.
