We are only four episodes in, but Yong Ju (Kim Se Jeong ) and Min Ju (Lee Jong Won) are already giving viewers butterflies. Now this is what a true rom-com should be!
From the Ju-Ju couple noticing each other’s quirks to Min Ju realizing he’s fallen for the ultra-extroverted Yong Ju, here are three moments from “Brewing Love” episodes three and four that gave us butterflies and made us giggle.
Warning: Spoilers for episodes 3-4 ahead!
“To be loved is to be seen”
Min Ju’s observance of Yong Ju and her emotions is not unexpected; his empathic nature is an integral part of the story. However, what makes him endearing in episodes three and four is his actions. After hearing her talk about coffee and sweet treats, he gets her what she wants, which is not out of character, as he has done the same thing for his brother before.
But, is there a need for him to tie her hair himself instead of just handing her the rubber band? The answer is “absolutely not.” Yet, this exact inability of his to stay away from her makes his feelings apparent.
On the other hand, we have Yong Ju, who is not even an empath, but is caring and observant, which might result from her life experiences or an occupational habit as an ex-military member. Seeing her notice Min Ju’s quirks, regardless of the reason, is healing, as these are the very same habits his father has scolded him for his entire life and that other people have used to take advantage of him. Not only does she take note of the things he dislikes, but she also ensures not repeat those actions to make him feel more comfortable.
Whether it’s her taking a photo with the somewhat drunk and extremely enthusiastic customers so he doesn’t have to, switching her military boots for a regular white pair, or covering the table corner so he doesn’t bump into it and hurt himself, seeing Yong Ju respect and, at times, protect Min Ju makes it clear they are meant for each other. In a later scene, Min Ju is also shown wearing a hair tie around his wrist in case she needs one.
It’s the combined small actions both main characters do for each other that make their story sweet.
Min Ju coming to Yong Ju’s defense
The main reason why Yong Ju goes to Maeul village is to make Min Ju sign a contract with Jisang Liquor and bring Min Ju to Seoul. Unaware of this, the villagers, particularly Min Ju’s employees, help her get closer to Min Ju. However, in episodes three and four, Ah Reum reveals the secret behind Yong Ju’s visit. This sends the villagers into a justified fury, as they fear losing their jobs if Min Ju stops making beer in the village and ends up firing them.
Blinded by rage, they throw salt at Yong Ju to show their anger and disapproval. But Min Ju, who usually does not like to interact with people, becomes a physical shield for her. Not only does Min Ju come to her defense, but he also prepares her a meal while she is cleaning up at his house. Later, he tells her, “I never got the wrong idea. I’ve been watching you as you are from the very beginning.”
As an empath, he is naturally aware of her true self, but seeing him be open about his feelings and letting her know that he trusts her no matter what is satisfying.
Min Ju’s love confession
Being an empath is much more than having empathy; it means the individual has an exceptional ability to sense the emotions of those around them. On paper, being an empath might not sound draining, but in reality, feeling others’ emotions can make it difficult for the empath to differentiate others’ feelings from their own. We get a glimpse of Min Ju’s struggle after meeting Yong Ju for the second time at his brewery. Min Ju feels distressed as he senses her distress. He has to tell himself out loud that the distress and sadness he feels are not his own and that he needs to focus on himself.
This moment comes full circle when Yong Ju is shown tending to her coworker Kang Bum’s (Ryu Won Woo) wound. At first, Min Ju notices Kang Bum fidgeting under Yong Ju’s touch, patting his chest in reaction to a fast heartbeat caused by her close proximity. Min Ju realizes he is feeling the same emotions and hypothesizes that the love he feels in his heart is not his own but rather a reflection of Kang Bum’s feelings.
But in the end, Min Ju shifts from telling himself, “This isn’t my feeling, it’s not mine, don’t be confused,” to questioning, “Are they mine?” while watching Yong Ju run toward him — and nothing can top this scene.
The audience expected Yong Ju to chase after Min Ju for a bit longer, but it seems like the chase wraps up within just two episodes. Now, we’ll get to see them grow closer while working together to create a new beer for Jisang Liquor. The only possible hurdle that could come between them is Min Ju feeling sympathy for Kang Bum, which might lead Min Ju to step back and let Kang Bum have a chance. So, let’s hope the future holds more fluff and less angst!
